Inspiring 12-Year-Old Uses His “Make-A-Wish” To Feed Others

The 12-year-old chef couldn’t eat much while he was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but now that he feels much better, he has decided to use his <a href="http://mn.wish.org">“Make-A-Wish”</a> to feed others and express his gratitude for life.</p> <p>Lucas told <a href="http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2015/07/20/eagan-boy-uses-make-a-wish-for-charity-food-truck/">WCCO-TV</a>: <em>“When I was sick, people brought me food from our church, and it was really nice of them.”</em></p> <p>As is shared in the video by <a href="http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2015/07/20/eagan-boy-uses-make-a-wish-for-charity-food-truck/">WCCO-TV</a> below, Hobbs was first inspired to start a food truck after watching the movie “<em>Chef,</em>” about a father and son who run a food truck together.</p> <p>And now Hobbs has one! Oncologist Sentenced To 45 Years In Prison For Wrongly Diagnosing And Administering Chemo To Patients

While some health care practitioners have begun to recognize the importance of diet and lifestyle and now recommend <em>preventive</em> care as a main form of ‘medicine’, others have <a href="http://www.scu.edu/ethics/publications/submitted/morreim/prescribing.html">wrongly benefited from vulnerable patients</a> and traded their integrity as physicians for profit.</p> <p>One such doctor, Farid Fata, has a long jail sentence ahead of him for such malpractice. A hematologist-oncologist who once worked in the suburbs of Detroit, Fata was <strong>sentenced to 45 years in prison</strong> for running a fraud scheme in which he falsely ‘diagnosed’ patients with Cancer. Once he wrongly misdiagnosed them, he then prescribed unnecessary chemotherapy and other cancer treatments to help them ‘remedy’ their non-existent condition.</p> <p>In order to scam Medicare and private insurance companies for more than $34 million, Fata, who was the <em>head</em> of Michigan Hematology Oncology, one of the state’s largest private cancer networks, misdiagnosed a number of individuals.</p> <p>One of Fata’s nurses, Angela Swantek, noted that his oncology practice was very busy. She observed up to a dozen patients getting chemotherapy treatments at any on time and, therefore, filed a complaint with the Michigan licensing regulators. After an investigation, however, the state later determined nothing to be out of compliance.</p> <p>It took a 3-year investigation by the FBI to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/michigan-oncologist-farid-fata-charged-with-fraud-sentenced-to-45-years-in-prison-2015-7">reveal Fata’s practice for what it is</a>: a dangerous <strong>‘chemo mill’. </strong><br /></p> <p>A tip from George Karadsheh of Crittenton Cancer Center in Rochester Hills sparked the investigation. He had heard from other doctors that Fata often insisted on aggressive chemotherapy for his patients even when they did not require it.</p> <p>In 2013<strong>*</strong> Fata was arrested, and later <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Health/whistle-blower-helped-expose-michigan-cancer-doctor-mistreated/story?id=32369291">pled guilty to 13 counts of health care fraud</a>, including money laundering and accepting kickbacks from Guardian Angel Hospice and Guardian Angel Home Health Care. No other cases have been as egregious as Dr. Fata’s, according to U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade of the Eastern District of Michigan.</p> <p>You can learn about the dollar amounts Fata will forfeit due to his criminal activity by visiting <a href="http://www.healthcarefinancenews.com/news/oncologist-sentenced-45-years-prison-over-chemotherapy-fraud">healthcarefinancenews.com</a>.</p> <p>*Although this account is from 2013, TrueActivist shared it as a means to raise awareness about the corruption which does exist within the mainstream healthcare system. New ‘Earth’ Capable Of Life Discovered By NASA Scientists

<p>Scientists have found what they’re calling Earth’s “older, bigger cousin."</p> <span>[embedded content]</span> <p>Have you ever wondered if <em>other intelligent life forms exist</em> in the universe? According to NASA, it’s pretty much a guarantee, as was shared in the article <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/top-nasa-scientists-say-evidence-of-extraterrestrial-life-is-coming-within-years/">“NASA Openly Admits Alien Life Exists.” </a></p> <p>But scientists may have found what they’re now calling Earth’s “older, bigger cousin,” and it could key in some clues to answer the question once and for all.</p> <p>As the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/24/science/space/kepler-data-reveals-what-might-be-best-goldilocks-planet-yet.html?_r=1"><em>New York Times</em> reports</a>, planet hunters from NASA are excited about what is now recognized as the strongest lead yet to finding advanced life to somewhere else in the universe.</p> <p>The new planet, Kepler 425b, is about 60% bigger than Earth, and orbits a suns similar to ours every 385 days. According to the scientists, that orbit puts it in what is called the “Goldilocks Zone” – neither too hot, nor too cold, but just right for life.</p> <div><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/new-earth-capable-of-life-discovered-by-nasa-scientists/nytimes/" rel="attachment wp-att-36533"><img alt="Credit: NYTimes" class="wp-image-36533" height="410" src="http://cdn9.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/NYTimes.jpg" width="730" /></a> <p>Credit: NYTimes</p> </div> <p>Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that the planet’s star has been around a billion years longer than Earth’s, therefore there’s been more time for life to take root and possibly evolve.</p> <blockquote readability="11"> <p><em>“It’s awe-inspiring to consider that this planet has spent six billion years in the habitable zone of its star, longer than Earth,”</em> Jon Jenkins of NASA’s Ames Research Center said at the announcement Thursday. <em>“That’s substantial opportunity for life to arise, should all the necessary ingredients and conditions for life exist on this planet.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p>The new planet is named after the Kepler spacecraft that spotted it. Kepler 452b is the 4,696th planet the space probe has so far discovered.</p> <p>But don’t get <em>too</em> anxious about the discovery… Kepler 425b is 1,400 light years away. New Study: Living Near Trees Is Good For Your Body AND Wallet

Why, just a couple of weeks ago, TrueActivist shared what <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/this-is-what-happened-when-the-city-of-melbourne-gave-email-addresses-to-trees/">happens when you give trees email addres</a>s (<strong>hint:</strong> citizens send them <em>thousands</em> of love letters).</p> <p>But a <a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2015/07/13/living-on-tree-lined-streets-has-health-benefits-study-finds.html">recently published study</a> affirming the lesser-known benefits derived from living near trees is also something to get excited about. According to researchers from the University of Chicago and various Toronto organizations:</p> <blockquote readability="12"> <p><em>“…people who live in neighborhoods with a higher density of trees on their streets report significantly higher health perception and significantly less cardio-metabolic conditions (controlling for socio-economic and demographic factors). We find that having 10 more trees in a city block, on average, improves health perception in ways comparable to an increase in annual personal income of $10,000 and moving to a neighborhood with $10,000 higher median income or being 7 years younger.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p>Researchers began by looking at Toronto, a location which has a lot of tree cover in its residential areas and highly accurate health data from the Province’s universal health plan. They found that <em>“people who live on a tree-lined block are less likely to report conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease or diabetes.”</em></p> <div><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/new-study-living-near-trees-is-good-for-your-body-and-wallet/toronto/" rel="attachment wp-att-36514"><img alt="Credit: Toronto " class="wp-image-36514" height="537" src="http://cdn9.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Toronto.jpg" width="730" /></a> <p>Credit: Toronto Study</p> </div> <p><a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2015/07/13/living-on-tree-lined-streets-has-health-benefits-study-finds.html">According to team leader</a> of the study, <a href="http://psychology.uchicago.edu/people/faculty/berman.shtml">Marc Bergman of the University of Chicago</a>:</p> <blockquote readability="10"> <p>“<em>Researchers don’t know why, exactly, trees seem to be good for people’s health. “Is it that the trees are cleaning the air? Is it that the trees are encouraging people to go outside and exercise more? Or is it their aesthetic beauty? We need to understand that,”</em> he said.</p> </blockquote> <p><em>L</em>ikely everyone who appreciates this study will agree with city councillor Sarah Doucette’s sentiments: <em>“Yes, I’m a tree hugger – and I love it.”</em></p> <p>An interesting point is noted by the website <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/economics/living-tree-lined-streets-makes-you-young-thin-and-rich.html">TreeHugger</a>, however, in bringing to attention several correlations discovered and documented several years ago. The staff writer Brian Merchant, in his titled piece “<a href="http://www.treehugger.com/economics/how-spot-income-inequality-space-look-trees.html">How to Spot Income Inequality from Space: Look for the Trees</a>,” quoted <a href="http://persquaremile.com/2012/05/17/urban-trees-reveal-income-inequality/">Tim DeChant</a> who shared that:</p> <blockquote readability="13"> <p><em>“For every 1 percent increase in per capita income, demand for forest cover increased by 1.76 percent. But when income dropped by the same amount, demand decreased by 1.26 percent. That’s a pretty tight correlation. The researchers reason that wealthier cities can afford more trees, both on private and public property. The well-to-do can afford larger lots, which in turn can support more trees. On the public side, cities with larger tax bases can afford to plant and maintain more trees.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p>So, are people living near trees because they are already rich and healthy or are the trees contributing to their longevity and padded wallet?</p> <p>At the moment, all one <em>really</em> needs to know is that trees are an indispensable resource worthy of the admiration so far gained. The People Who Live On This Island Will Kill Anyone Who Tries To Come Ashore

These people are one of the last Stone Age tribes on Earth whose culture has been completely untouched by modern civilization.</p> <p>Despite the fact that the island formally belongs to India, no one dares to visit it and approach the Sentinelese tribe. The reason is their extreme violence and hostility – anyone who has ever tried to come ashore the island was attacked or even killed.</p> <p><a href="http://cdn10.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/1024px-North_Sentinel_Island.jpg"><img alt="1024px-North_Sentinel_Island" class="aligncenter wp-image-36510" height="730" src="http://cdn10.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/1024px-North_Sentinel_Island.jpg" width="730" /></a></p> <h4>Contacts with the Sentinelese tribe</h4> <p><strong>In 1896,</strong> a Hindu convict escaped from the prison but had a bad luck to ground on North Sentinel on a makeshift raft. As a result, his body was found a few days later on a beach, perforated by arrows and with the throat cut.</p> <p><strong>On August 2, 1981,</strong> when the ship Primrose ran aground on the North Sentinel Island reef, the crew noticed men on the beach who were carrying arrows and spears. The captain tried to use radio communication to ask for help, but did not receive it. Fortunately, the crew was lucky enough to be kept away from the island by the troubled waters and rescued by helicopter a few days later.</p> <p><a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-3049022/The-island-dangerous-visit-Mysterious-Sentinelese-tribe-rejected-outsiders-60-000-years-try-kill-sets-foot-land.html">The Daily Mail</a>: “<em><a href="http://www.survivalinternational.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Survival International</a> reported late last year that it had received reports that fishermen are targeting the area, with seven men being apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard.</em></p> <p><em>One of the fishermen reportedly stepped foot on the island in close proximity to the tribe’s members, and he managed to leave unscathed.</em></p> <p><em>Survival International, which advocates for tribal peoples’ rights, describes the Sentinelese as ‘the most vulnerable society on the planet’ as they are likely to have no immunity to common diseases such as flu and measles.</em></p> <p><em>Due to their complete isolation, the chances of them being wiped out by an epidemic are very high, according to the organization.”</em></p> <p>After the catastrophic Indian Ocean earthquake of 2004, the Indian government sent a helicopter to check on the Sentinelese tribe. It’s curious that the North Sentinel Island and its inhabitants were almost unaffected while some nearby islands suffered heavy damage.</p> <p>When the helicopter hovered over a group of tribesmen, they were throwing stones and shooting arrows at it.</p> <p><a href="http://cdn10.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/sentinell.jpg"><img alt="sentinell" class="aligncenter wp-image-36511" height="473" src="http://cdn10.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/sentinell.jpg" width="731" /></a></p> <p><strong>On January 26, 2006,</strong> two men were killed when fishing illegally in the area. A coastguard helicopter tried to retrieve their bodies but was unable to land because of a shower of arrows from the locals.</p> <h4>What else is known about the Sentinelese tribe</h4> <p>The Sentinelese are believed to have lived on the island for 60,000 years! After this unthinkable period of time in isolation, it’s no surprise that they are so hostile to outsiders, which may be due to past conflicts with the outside world. In order to protect the Tribe and prevent unnecessary violence, the Indian government has also made it illegal to approach it closer than three miles.</p> <p>Due to the inability to study the tribe and the island, we don’t know much about them. It is estimated that the tribe counts between 50 and 400 members and lives exclusively by hunting and gathering. Though it is difficult to observe the island from the air because of the dense tree cover, it is established that the Sentinelese are not familiar with agriculture.</p> <p>Their drive to protect their culture from the outside world is probably the reason they have survived in isolation for so many years. Who knows how long they will manage to live in the middle of the ocean without having the slightest interest in the “civilized” rest of the world. Generosity Triumphs Greed In This Awesome Social Experiment

<p>If you came across the opportunity to 'help yourself to some free money,' what would you do?</p> <div><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/generosity-triumphs-greed-in-this-awesome-social-experiment/money-7/" rel="attachment wp-att-36491"><img alt="Credit: Ark Project Now" class="wp-image-36491" height="411" src="http://cdn10.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Money.png" width="730" /></a> <p>Credit: Ark Project Now</p> </div> <p>If you came across the offer to <em>‘help yourself to some free money,’</em> what would you do?</p> <p>This is what the folks from Ark Project Now decided to find out, and they did this by conducting a social experiment in which they stuck a bunch of dollar bills on a board with the words <em>“Take what you need, give what you can.”</em> The footage below shows the community’s response – and it’s awesome!</p> <center>[embedded content]</center> <p>The board was located on the busy Mission Beach in San Diego, California. As might be expected, the money covered board drew a lot of attention. Some people stopped to take photos, and others even put some put some cash on it!</p> <p><strong>The experiment began with $20, and within 45 minutes had $40.</strong></p> <p>Said one man in awe of the experiment: <em>“It makes your brain scramble seeing all that money floating around. It makes you think how many people are out here doing the right thing.”</em></p> <blockquote readability="12"> <p><em>“If I were rich, I’d be putting $100 up there,”</em> he added. <em>“There’s so many hundreds of other people in more need than I am. As long as I got my mental health and meal for tomorrow I’m not greedy. Greed destroys love. marriages, relationships, it destroys everything. As TrueActivist has <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/since-april-2014-bee-population-has-declined-40-60/" rel="nofollow">shared before</a>, the tiny, bumbling insects are responsible for a lot – making them essential in the future of our planet.</p> <p>Therefore, with massive bee die-offs (otherwise known as "colony collapse disorder"), it has been the plight of many scientists, beekeepers, and educated activists to do whatever it takes to ensure bees survive.</p> <p>Some theories exist as to what is causing colony collapse, such as Monsanto’s GMO crops, the insecticides used to treat them, and EMF frequencies from excessive technological use. But debate persists.</p> <p>In wake of all the controversy, the German Beekeepers Association (DIB), which represents almost 100,000 beekeepers, decided to take action by calling for a nationwide ban on GMO cultivation. The news comes from a report published by the German NGO keine-gentechnik.de.</p> <p>As GMWatch shares, this call for a ban follows controversial legislation allowing E.U. member states to opt-out of GM cultivation, even though it has been approved at the European Union level.</p> <p>As might be expected, many pro-GMO advocates are angry about the new law, calling it “unfounded,” and stating that it “lacks scientific justification.” Many non-GMO supporters – especially beekeepers – stand strong in their stance, however, and point to the many documented dangers (and unproven suspicions) of genetically modified foods.</p> <p>They also bring to attention the known damage caused by herbicides and pesticides used to grow them, as well as the decimation of pollinating insects.</p> <p>Beekeepers are hoping that Germany's Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt will soon administer a nationwide ban. At this point, they – and the rest of the world – need action to be taken to preserve the declining numbers of pollinating bees. So far, the Minister has argued in favor of allowing each state individually to decide if they will ban GMOs.</p> <p>Because bees can fly up to eight kilometers to pollinate and search for food, this is far from the compromise bee advocates are seeking. Even if one state banned GM crops, cross-contamination from crops of a nearby state could occur, further harming bee populations.</p> <p>Beekeepers state that this would be “environmentally and agriculturally unacceptable.”</p> <p>In addition, the exposure of bees to biotech chemicals like glyphosate (which was determined to be "probably carcinogenic" by the WHO’s IARC), would no doubt compromise their numbers even more.</p> <p>We agree with the DIB’s statement: “Bees know no borders.”</p> <p>For this reason, it is essential individuals recognize the importance of bees and band together to demand a ban on GMOs in their own country. Andrew Cuomo's decision to convene a Wage Board, which has the power to set a new minimum for the fast food industry's 200,000 workers in New York without the approval of the state legislature.</p> <p>On Wednesday, the Board recommended that the new floor be phased in, rising to $15 by the end of 2018 in New York City, and July of 2021 for the rest of the state.</p> <p>The three-member board arrived at its decision after listening to hours of emotional testimony from workers, unions, and business owners who described both the difficulty of working for the current state minimum wage, and the potential impact of raising it dramatically. The increase still has to go through a comment period and a regulatory process at the state's Department of Labor before becoming final.</p> <p>Ultimately, the board members sided with workers like Alexandra Candelaria, 21, who testified at a hearing in Buffalo. She lives with six other family members, while struggling with a cancer called soft tissue sarcoma, and works three part-time jobs including one at McDonalds, for $9.25 an hour.</p> <p>"I work so hard, and I’m only 21. I’m so tired of being sick and tired all the time, and I don’t have time to stop, because I’ve got so many bills," she told the panel at a hearing in Buffalo. "Working my way out of poverty has never been in the cards for me until now. Now I have hope."</p> <p>The Wage Board's decision is a victory for the Service Employees International Union, which has poured millions of dollars over the past few years into campaigning for a $15 minimum wage nationwide. Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle have put themselves on the path towards that level.</p> <p>The "Fight for $15" campaign has also racked up several more incremental wins: Massachusetts recently decided to raise the minimum wage for home health care aides to $15 an hour, for example. Major companies like Facebook and Aetna have done so for their own employees, and in Facebook's case those of its contractors.</p> <p>Just Wednesday, the University of California system announced that all its employees and contractors would also be paid $15 an hour within the next three years.</p> <p>In New York, Cuomo decided to pursue the fast food industry specifically because it's the largest low-wage employer in the state, and wages had not risen significantly despite robust employment growth, forcing taxpayers to make up the difference through public assistance programs.</p> <p>"When an industry is not going to correct itself, the government has to step in," said board member Mike Fishman, the SEIU's secretary treasurer.</p> <p><a href="http://www.occupy.com/sites/default/files/medialibrary/1432349920182.jpeg" rel="nofollow"><img alt="" src="http://www.occupy.com/sites/default/files/medialibrary/1432349920182.jpeg" /></a></p> <p><strong>Industry opposition</strong></p> <p>The restaurant industry has fiercely fought the idea of targeting one sector with a higher wage, and accuse the governor of setting up the Wage Board to have a predetermined outcome.</p> <p>"The entire process has been a sham and the cards have been stacked against the hard-working men and women that own and operate New York’s restaurants from day one,” the Save NY Restaurants Coalition said in a statement after the vote.</p> <p>“Today’s decision will hurt the very people Governor Cuomo is purportedly trying to help. Restaurants will be forced to streamline labor costs through automation and attrition or close their doors completely."</p> <p>Although the wage hike targets fast food chains with more than 30 outlets nationwide, full-service restaurants expect that they’ll be indirectly affected as well.</p> <p>“All restaurants, at some level, compete in the same labor pool. Full-service restaurants will have to lift their wages even higher to retain the top talent in the back of the house,” said Kevin Dugan, a spokesman for the New York State Restaurant Association.</p> <p>"This raise, combined with the 50 percent increase that the previous wage board gave to tipped employees, will force labor costs to dramatically increase for all types of restaurants."</p> <p>The extent to which the wage hike will actually impact customers, however, is still hard to predict. In places where large wage increases have started to take effect, prices have risen, but so far there’s no solid indication of how those changes have affected sales.</p> <p>“For something like fast food, you’re not likely to see as big a shift as you would for example clothing retail, where you might go bargain shopping,” said Chris Jones, vice president for research at the Regional Plan Association, which analyzes issues affecting the area where New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania intersect. “Someone’s not going to go bargain shopping for a Burger King. They want it where they are."</p> <p>But Jones cautions that there are ways in which raising wages could actually help restaurants: Workers may stay in their jobs longer, cutting down on turnover costs, and may become more productive. Also, higher wages puts more money in the pockets of people who are the most likely to spend it.</p> <p>Besides, if prices do go up, there could be a health-related silver lining, said Mike Cassidy, a policy associate at the research-minded Century Foundation. “It’s like a tax on fast food that we don’t want people eating anyway.”</p> <p><a href="http://www.occupy.com/sites/default/files/medialibrary/Screen-Shot-2015-07-22-at-3.03.10-PM.png" rel="nofollow"><img alt="" src="http://www.occupy.com/sites/default/files/medialibrary/Screen-Shot-2015-07-22-at-3.03.10-PM.png" /></a></p> <p><strong>Spillover effects</strong></p> <p>Rising wages likely won’t be confined just to the restaurant industry. Other businesses that employ low-wage workers are likely to offer more in order to compete for quality workers. Take retail, for example: Workers at a shoe store in the mall are likely going to need a little something extra to keep them from taking a job at the food court.</p> <p>“We in the retail industry are drawing from the same pool of potential employees, clearly. And we’re not the only ones,” said Ted Potrikus, president of the Retail Council of New York State. “Anyone who’s paying under $15 an hour is going to have to look at what they’re offering to get good employees.”</p> <p>Eventually, the spillover effect might get another nudge from the governor. Cuomo resorted to a wage board only after his proposal to raise the state minimum wage to $10.50 an hour across the state and $11.50 in New York City — which most of the state’s business community also opposed — failed in the legislature.</p> <p>Last week, he started moving on another front, convening a task force to investigate abuses in other low-wage industries. That will likely lead to a series of reports, which may undergird a renewed push to raise the state minimum wage across the board. That’s the approach that economists tend to prefer anyway.</p> <p>“In terms of economic efficiency, it would be better to impose it generally,” said Isaac Ehrlich, chairman of the economics department at the State University of New York-Buffalo.</p> <p>And this time, it may be successful, because of the shifting politics around the issue. “This thing polls so highly,” said Potrikus of the retail council, who bucked the state’s business community and backed the first minimum wage proposal.</p> <p>“Ninety percent of New Yorkers want an increase in the minimum wage. I really want 90 percent of New Yorkers to come into my store. Maybe I should support this.”</p> <p>From here, the SEIU is likely to take the sector-specific fight to other states with laws that empower governors to unilaterally raise wages. But first, the model being forged in New York will likely face more tests. The Wage Board process is settled law in New York — Cuomo’s predecessor, Gov. David Patterson, used it to raise wages for tipped workers in 2009 — but that hasn’t stopped a coalition of franchisees from hiring a high-powered lawyer to fight it.</p> <p>That’s why the Wage Board sought to back up its determination with evidence. At the announcement Wednesday afternoon, a representative from the federal Department of Labor presented data showing that the cost of living statewide is $15.91, and that the average fast food worker makes far below that.</p> <p>"These guys have undergone this process with an expectation that there will be aggressive challenges because of what it could mean for other cities and states and the growing movement,” said Neal Kwatra, who served as a labor representative on the 2009 Wage Board, and now consults for the New York State Democratic Party. President Michelle Bachelet has said she plans to implement comprehensive education reform this year, which will guarantee quality education for everyone. To ensure this happens, the movement has increased pressure on the government with huge protests by teachers and students last month, including an indefinite strike by the National Teachers Union that began June 1.</p> <p>Over the years, the movement has learned to temper its expectations. In 2011 — when protests were last at a peak — many thought change was imminent, only to suffer frustration and loss of momentum in the years that followed. But this time may be different.</p> <p>According to Bill Moyer — a social change activist and founding member of the Movement for a New Society, a network of activist collectives that played a key role in nonviolent social movements in the 1970s and 1980s — movements often go through eight stages. Based on the model he designed for understanding the cycle of a social movement — called the Movement Action Plan, or MAP — the education movement in Chile is nearing the final stages. Before learning about those, however, it is important to understand how it got to this point.</p> <p>Students have historically been at the forefront of social protests in Chile. High school students were some of the first to defy Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship, while university students used their campuses as safe places for resistance. After the end of Pinochet’s regime the student movement took time to re-focus their demands and set up new forms of organization and protest.</p> <p>Following this process of re-adjustment, high school students sparked Chile’s movement for education in 2006 — known as the “penguin revolution” because of the shape and color of the school uniforms — with a very specific demand for free and universal student transport passes. They soon moved on to more structural demands against the neoliberal economic policies affecting education, specifically the Organic Constitutional Act of Teaching, which reduced state involvement in education and came into force on the last day of Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship on March 10, 1990.</p> <p>The movement was briefly successful in putting education on the political agenda. Mobilizations came to an end after President Bachelet — during her first term in office from 2006 to 2010 — repealed the controversial act. However, the demand for free, quality public education, was still far from being met.</p> <p>At this point, the movement entered stage three, or “ripening conditions,” where people form new groups and small civil disobedience actions start to dramatize the problem. After the 2006 protests there was a period of lower activity within the movement, but slowly new collectives began to emerge, along with a clearer demand for radical transformation of education in Chile.</p> <p>The movement was then ready for the fourth stage, or “take off.” This usually happens after a trigger event — caused by the movement itself or by the power-holders — and, after significant organizing, which leads to massive demonstrations, large acts of civil disobedience and extensive media coverage.</p> <p>In Chile, the trigger was the 2010 election of Sebastián Piñera, the country’s first right-wing president since Augusto Pinochet was forced out of office. Piñera’s government came to power as a reaction to years of frustration with the Coalition of Parties for Democracy — the center-left coalition that had been in power since the end of the Pinochet dictatorship. This development, combined with a growing perception that real social justice would not come from the top down, created stronger unity on the left to organize against the government.</p> <p>Student organizers, who represented the many thousands of young people eager to engage politically by creative means other than the ballot box, understood that the time was ripe for massive mobilizations.</p> <p>The movement then launched a campaign that involved a great diversity of actions, including mass marches, school occupations, flash mobs, an alternative referendum on whether education should be free and much more. Most of the student protests were heavily repressed by the police. The government tried to blame the violence on the students, but the images of students, teachers and parents marching peacefully being tear gassed and hit by water cannons belied this narrative. This repression backfired, as polls showed that the movement had more than 70 percent approval among the public, which put education at the top of the political agenda in 2011.</p> <p>At the time there was a feeling within the movement that it was possible to change things immediately, but as Moyer argues, change takes time and movements usually have to go through various stages before achieving their goals. One weakness of the student movement is that it is very dependent on the school year. Students struggle to keep the momentum going during the summer break and every year there is new student leadership.</p> <p>Between 2012 and 2014, the movement went through the fifth stage, which Moyer calls the “perception of failure.” In this stage, there is a lower level of participation in actions and the movement appears to be having less of an impact. Many participants felt that large protests weren’t bringing about real change in education and that it was time to look for new strategies.</p> <p>There were also divisions among those in the movement, most notoriously manifested in the different positions taken by activists on voting — first in the 2012 local elections and later during the 2013 presidential and parliamentary elections. While many of the university student leaders strongly supported voting for different candidates to local government — and some even ran and got elected to parliament themselves — the high school student leadership could not have been more different. They called for a boycott of the elections, arguing that no real change would come through electoral politics.</p> <p>During the fifth stage, politicians often argue that they have “received the message of the people” and that now it is their turn to design and implement the changes that the people have demanded. For the Chilean student movement, this meant that the debate moved from the streets to Congress and the political parties.</p> <p>At the same time, the mainstream political conversation was dominated by the presidential elections of 2013. Many people had hoped Michelle Bachelet’s re-election would come with a mandate to radically reform the education system. Bachelet had finished her first presidential term in 2010 with historically high approval rates, thanks to economic measures that — in a limited, but direct way — supported working-class people. The main message of her 2013 presidential campaign was a commitment to end inequality in Chile.</p> <p>Since her re-election, however, Bachelet has failed to put forward education proposals that actually meet the movement’s demands. The government argues that this is not due to a lack of political will, but rather the limited resources of a stagnant economy. To implement and be able to afford their education reform, the government passed tax reform last year, with the goal of raising more taxes from big companies. To many, however, this reform fell short of the promise to end inequality in the country. Chile doesn’t lack resources, what it lacks is a just distribution of wealth.</p> <p>At present, the movement is in the sixth stage, which Moyer called “winning over the majority.” After more than a year of Bachelet’s government, the movement is clear that the radical change they demand for free, quality public education, will not come through the reform that this government is proposing. The government reforms face strong opposition in Congress, so the government has had to water down their proposals to make sure they get approved.</p> <p>The movement understands that it is now vital to work on proposals that counteract those put forward by the government and use its power to secure as good a deal as possible, knowing that it will not be the end of the struggle.</p> <p>While there have been proposals for reform from students and teachers over the years, they have become more important than ever now that the government is sending education bills to Congress. On June 6, the Chile Student Confederation, which represents students from the so-called “traditional” universities — public schools that were privatized by Pinochet — agreed on an education proposal called “Chile decides.” It put forward a petition with nine points, including: the development of curriculum by teachers, stability for workers, internal democracy for schools, free and universal education, and an end to profit in education in all its forms.</p> <p>The proposals have been accompanied by growing social pressure. In June, there was an increase in the regularity and the number of people at marches. For instance, the protest organized by students on June 10 mobilized almost 350,000 people throughout Chile. These actions are happening at the same time as the indefinite teachers’ strike is taking place.</p> <p>According to Moyer, there are two stages after the sixth: “success” and the “consolidation of success and moving over to other struggles.” Even though these stages are not necessarily linear, and not all movements go through all of them, it is a model that attempts to make sense of the processes experienced by a movement and to ultimately show that change takes time.</p> <p>The education movement in Chile is at a historic point, having already gone through several stages of a long struggle. It wouldn’t be in the position it is now — with Bachelet’s government set to reform the Chilean education system this year — if not for continuous organizing and creative actions.</p> <p>The movement is aware that this is a crucial moment and it has raised its level of mobilization accordingly, knowing it is possible that the government might make compromises on many of their demands in response to pressure from more moderate sectors. Update: House Passes Bill Blocking States From Requiring GMO Labels On Food

<p>The US House just passed a bill banning states from passing their own laws requiring GMO labels.</p> <div readability="32"><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/update-house-passes-bill-blocking-states-from-requiring-gmo-labels-on-food/gmo21/" rel="attachment wp-att-36483"><img alt="Credit: PopularResistance.org" class="size-medium wp-image-36483" height="288" src="http://cdn10.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/GMo21-400x288.jpg" width="400" /></a> <p>Credit: PopularResistance.org</p> </div> <p><em>Do consumers deserve to know what’s in their food?</em> The House of Representatives just voted to make that harder, when on Thursday they passed a bill <strong>banning states from passing their own laws requiring GMO labels. </strong></p> <p>The<strong> “<a href="http://agriculture.house.gov/sites/republicans.agriculture.house.gov/files/pdf/GMO_02_xml%207-12-15.pdf">Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015</a></strong>,” which passed 275-150, will create a federal standard for the voluntary labeling of foods containing GMO ingredients.</p> <p>Representative Mike Pompeo <strong>of Monsanto</strong>, who authored the bill, called mandatory labeling laws – which have already been passed in Vermont, Connecticut, and Maine – <em>“unnecessarily costly given that GMos have been deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).” </em></p> <blockquote readability="8"> <p><em>“Precisely zero pieces of credible evidence have been presented that foods produced with biotechnology pose any risk to our health and safety,”</em> Pompeo said. <em>“We should not raise prices on consumers based on the wishes of a handful of activists.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p><em>O</em>pponents are pushing back against the legislation, however, saying it will <strong>keep consumers from knowing what is in their food</strong>, and stop FDA from crafting a national GMO-labeling solution.</p> <p>If you are not yet aware, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are seeds of certain crops engineered to resist herbicides. Common in America’s corn and soybean crops, most GMO yields are used to feed animals for slaughter or are turned into processed foods such as high-fructose corn syrup. While government officials and the food industry claim GMOs are safe, consumer advocates seeking transparency on labels argue that no one really knows the long-term impacts of genetically modified crops.</p> <p>In fact, there are many conflicting studies – some <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/new-study-gmo-corn-makes-rats-infertile/">determining GMOs to be a health hazard</a>, and others (many which are <a href="http://www.naturalnews.com/049203_GMOs_biotech_industry_propaganda_studies.html">funded by biotech companies with an agenda</a>) deeming them to be ‘perfectly safe’.</p> <p>Either way, <em>don’t consumers deserve to know what’s in their food? </em></p> <div><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/update-house-passes-bill-blocking-states-from-requiring-gmo-labels-on-food/monsanto1-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-36475"><img alt="Credit: TakePart" class="wp-image-36475" height="488" src="http://cdn9.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Monsanto1.jpg" width="730" /></a> <p>Credit: TakePart</p> </div> <p>Consumer groups, backed by Democrats including Reps. Peter DeFazio (Ore.) and Rosa DeLauro (Conn.), are calling the bill the <strong>Denying Americans the Right to Know Act.</strong></p> <blockquote readability="10"> <p><em>“American families deserve to know what they are eating and feeding to their children,”</em> DeLauro told reporters Wednesday. <em>“The FDA already requires clear labeling of over 3,000 ingredients, additives and food processes. GMOs should be no different.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p>Supporters of the legislation claim a patchwork of labeling laws at the state level would drive up food costs.</p> <p>Citing a study conducted by a Cornell University professor, the Grocery Manufacturers Association said state-level GMO labeling mandates would increase grocery prices for a family of four by as much as $500 per year.  The study also states that mandatory state-level labeling would cost food and beverage manufacturers millions of dollars to change food labels and supply chain systems.</p> <p>It’s been repeatedly shown that 90%+ of Americans desire GMO labeling; the reason biotech companies are pushing for suppression is because they know a <em>minimum</em> of 56% of consumers would refrain from purchasing and consuming GMO-containing foods, which would equate to a loss of profit.</p> <p>Democrats represent many Americans, then, by maintaining that labeling would ensure transparency. “What’s the problem with letting consumers know what they are buying?” asked Rep. Project Lucifer, The Strangest Conspiracy Involving NASA

<p>Saddle up, it’s time for an awesome conspiracy theory.</p> <p>If you’re a fan of science fiction, you know about Arthur C. Clarke’s (and Stanley Kubrick’s) seminal novel series 2001: A Space Odyssey.</p> <p>In the second installment, 2010: Odyssey Two, the alien monolith that was orbiting Jupiter replicates itself and begins condensing the gas giant, eventually transforming it into a smaller sun.</p> <div class="td-g-rec td-g-rec-id-content_inline"></div> <p>This process turns the former planet’s moons into habitable worlds suitable for life. The people of Earth consequently name the second sun in the sky Lucifer.</p> <p>Without getting too ecclesiastic, the term Lucifer comes from Latin and literally means‘light-bringing.’ Fitting name for the solar system’s new star.</p> <p><img alt="Project_LUCIFER_NASA" class="alignnone wp-image-7768" height="346" src="http://www.conspiracyclub.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Project_LUCIFER_NASA.jpg" width="492" /></p> <p>Most of us regard this concept as nothing more than science fiction and nigh impossible to achieve with our current level of technology. But a number of conspiracy theorists not only believe it possible, they actually claim this is one of NASA’s ongoing projects. Here’s why.</p> <p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7uQ4-Jn77xI?feature=oembed" width="432" height="353" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <p>Jupiter has been called a failed star, in the sense that if it had more mass, it could have started nuclear fusion and effectively become a star. Unfortunately (fortunately?),astrophysicists calculated it would have needed to be 75 times more massive in order to do so.</p> <p>Conspiracy theorists believe this mass deficit could be corrected with the addition of nuclear fuel that could jump-start the process of nuclear fusion. Enter NASA’s space probes Galileo, Cassini, Voyager and the rest.</p> <p><img alt="jupiter-jupiter-ascending" class="alignnone wp-image-7769" height="276" src="http://www.conspiracyclub.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/jupiter-jupiter-ascending.jpg" width="491" /></p> <p>Planet Jupiter from the Jupiter Ascending movie</p> <p>In order for these space probes to work, they need a reliable fuel source as solar energy becomes difficult to catch once you get past the orbit of Mars.</p> <p>Therefore, NASA equipped its probes with an energy source called an RTG, short for radioisotope thermoelectric generator. The radioactive decay of the Plutonium-238 pellets contained in an RTG steadily produces electricity that powers the probe.</p> <p>For example, the Galileo space probe contained 2 RTGs, each carrying 17 pounds of Plutonium-238. What would happen if this payload were detonated inside Jupiter?</p> <p><img alt="probes-Galileo-Cassini-Voyager-jupiter" class="alignnone wp-image-7770" height="311" src="http://www.conspiracyclub.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/probes-Galileo-Cassini-Voyager-jupiter.jpg" width="498" /></p> <p>Well, nothing, or at least, nothing observable. In 2003, Galileo was deliberately crashed into Jupiter’s atmosphere. NASA followed this approach because they feared crashing it into one of Jupiter’s solid moons carried the risk of contamination with terrestrial bacteria.</p> <p>Conspiracy theorists saw this venture as an expression of Project Lucifer. They feared that, as Galileo fell through Jupiter’s dense atmosphere, the pressure would have steadily increased, causing the Plutonium in the RTGs to trigger a thermonuclear reaction, birthing the new sun.</p> <p>It’s been almost twelve years since Galileo was buried in the heart of the gaseous planet and nothing’s happened. There is no second sun on our sky. So we’re in the clear, right?</p> <p><img alt="1554eb6abc34f5e93df55caeab9db1ba28a6601b" class="alignnone wp-image-7771" height="398" src="http://www.conspiracyclub.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/1554eb6abc34f5e93df55caeab9db1ba28a6601b.png" width="498" /></p> <p>Not exactly. There’s another gas giant in our solar system: Saturn and it’s not much smaller than Jupiter. And there’s another probe orbiting Saturn, the Cassini space probe.</p> <p>And it’s equipped with 73 pounds of Plutonium-238. And it’s still orbiting Saturn, until commanded otherwise by NASA. So are we in danger?</p> <p>Physics says no.</p> <p>Even if every atom of Plutonium aboard the space probe would participate in a nuclear detonation, it wouldn’t be enough to start a chain reaction. It would be like a drop of water in a swimming pool – harmless.</p> <p>Our technology would need to steadily advance for hundreds if not thousands of years before we could reach the capability of star formation. And even if such technology would be available today, why would we need a second sun?</p> <p>Our own functions perfectly, even with massive UFOs stealing its energy once in a while. If one of the gas giants were to suddenly become a star, it would most likely disrupt the delicate balance of our solar system.</p> <p>Its gravitational pull would tug on the asteroids between Mars and Jupiter, undoubtedly sending some of them our way.</p> <p>So why did this conspiracy theory gain traction? The T Power H20 motorbike was developed in Sao Paulo, Brazil by a man named Ricardo Azevedo.</p> <p>The motorcycle can travel up to 310 miles on just a liter of water, and it does not require any specific type of water. Azevedo has even demonstrated how the motorcycle works using polluted water from a nearby river.</p> <p>The motorcycle works by combining a battery with a water combustion system that helps to generate electricity.</p> <p>In the video demonstrating his invention, Azevedo uses clean water to power the bike and drinks it on camera to show that it is not fuel.</p> <p><em>“The advantage of this motorcycle, which works with the hydrogen that comes from the water, is that the result that comes out of the exhaust is water vapour. This is different from gasoline, which the result is carbon monoxide,</em>” <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3169716/Motorcycle-runs-water-polluted-river-travel-310-miles-single-litre.html" target="_blank">Azevedo said.</a></p> <p>Azevedo’s invention could entirely change the transportation industry, but he should be careful because inventors like him have been discredited and even killed in the past. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and in the House by Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), the bill would go far beyond the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour and make it easier for federal workers to join a union.</p> <p>The proposed legislation follows another bill introduced by congressional Democrats in April that would raise the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour. Republicans have so far resisted raising the minimum wage.</p> <p>President Barack Obama issued an executive order last year raising the wage for federal contract workers to $10.10 an hour. But Sontia Bailey, a federally-contracted cashier at the U.S. Capitol, said she "struggled to survive" on $10.59 an hour. She was forced to take on a second job at Kentucky Fried Chicken, and works 70 hours a week.</p> <p>"KFC actually pays me more than Uncle Sam," she said at a rally in support of the $15 minimum wage bill outside the Capitol. "I'm here because America needs to know that long hours and low pay hurt working women and families."</p> <p>Her hours had taken a toll on her health, Bailey said, explaining that she had a miscarriage three weeks ago.</p> <p>"The truth is, I couldn't afford to weep. I had to get back to work, so I could have a proper and decent funeral for my baby last Saturday," she said. "A living wage and a union is the only way working women can get ahead, and stay ahead."</p> <p>Bailey's comments were echoed by Charles Gladden, a Senate contract worker who makes $11.33 an hour. Gladden was homeless, sleeping outside a Metro station a few blocks from the White House, until a crowdfunding campaign raised enough for him to live in an apartment.</p> <p>"Workers shouldn't have to rely on charity in order to survive," he said. "We need justice. Even though I now have a roof over my head, I'm still worried about holding on to it. ... The truth is that all the workers out here are just like me, we all are just one step away from being homeless, we are all one meal away from being hungry."</p> <p>Other Senate janitors and food service workers, as well as workers from the Capitol Visitor Center, the Pentagon, Union Station, the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Institution, joined Gladden and Bailey in protest. Good Jobs Nation, an advocacy group backed by the Change to Win labor coalition, organized the strike.</p> <p>Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sanders and other senators sent a letter to Obama in response to Gladden's story, calling on the president to issue a "model employer" executive order that would give contracting preference to firms that pay a living wage, offer health care and sick leave, and guarantee union rights for workers.</p> <p>Sanders, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said on Wednesday that he was introducing the $15 minimum wage bill because "workers are entitled to dignity," and noted that the U.S. government is the nation's "largest low-wage employer."</p> <p>"I think if you work 40 hours a week, you have a right not to live in poverty," he continued. "The current federal minimum wage is a starvation wage. It's got to be raised to a living wage."</p> <p>The federal minimum wage, which has not been raised since 2009, would be more than $26 an hour today if the wage had kept pace with productivity and inflation since 1968. In a press release, Sanders' office said increasing the minimum wage would benefit 62 million workers who currently make less than $15 an hour, including over half of African-American workers and nearly 60 percent of Latino workers.</p> <p>Sanders noted that Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco have already passed ordinances raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour, and argued that the federal government should do the same.</p> <p>Momentum for a higher federal minimum has continued to build as New York’s Wage Board is expected to approve a new $15 minimum wage for the state’s 200,000 fast food workers on Wednesday. A majority of states have a minimum wage higher than the one mandated by Congress.</p> <p>Capitol contract workers had previously gone on strike in April, after workers in more than 230 cities walked off the job as a part of the union-backed Fight for $15 movement, calling on corporations to raise their wages.</p> <p>Pamela Cadlett, a cashier in the Senate cafeteria, and Dewana Samuel, a Senate custodian, told The Huffington Post that they both made around $11 an hour. Cadlett, who has worked at the Senate for 13 years, saw her annual wage cut by more than half when Democrats led the push to privatize Senate dining services in 2008, using contractors to save money.</p> <p>"I'm really struggling, I'm about to lose my home," Samuel added. "That's just really pitiful. I come to work every day ... I need food stamps, I need public assistance, it's just sad. I am grateful for the job, but I need more than the job."</p> <p>The federal minimum wage has emerged as a fault line among the candidates seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. While Sanders and former Maryland Gov. By 2025, a quarter of all households will privately rent, they predict, with the biggest increase among those aged between 20 and 39, where “ a clear majority” will be private tenants within 10 years.</p> <p>Renting privately is now the norm, the report says, for those who cannot afford to buy but do not qualify for social housing. By 2025, PwC predicts that 7.2 million households will be in rented accommodation, compared with 5.4 million today and just 2.3 million in 2001. Despite government efforts to help homebuyers, the number of households buying with mortgages will have fallen by 0.8 million to 7.2 million over the same period.</p> <p>The report underlines the growing divide between those who can get on to the housing ladder and those who are unable to raise the funds to buy.</p> <p>“House purchases have historically been a major factor in driving wealth accumulation of lower and middle classes,” it said. “The inability of many to get on the ladder may limit this avenue to social mobility in the future.”</p> <p>Those already in the property market will continue to cash in as prices rise. The PWC report says that 35% of homes will be owned outright, without a mortgage, by 2025. In 1995, just 24% of homes were owned outright.</p> <p>Home ownership levels hit a peak in 2003, when 71% of homes in England were owned outright or with a mortgage. It had been on an upward curve since the early 1980s, when Thatcher gave council tenants the right to buy their homes, and the liberalization of the financial sector made mortgages more easily available.</p> <p>In the early 2000s, the advent of 100% mortgages and more relaxed lending criteria allowed buyers to keep up with rising prices, but affordability problems started to bite as the market reached its peak. The downward trend in ownership that started just before the financial crash was fueled by the credit crunch, which made banks and building societies less willing to lend.</p> <p>Although first-time buyer numbers rose in 2014 – to just over 300,000 – the figure was well below the half a million a year previously regarded as normal. Research from the Council of Mortgage Lenders shows 71% of people born in 1970 were homeowners by the time they were 40, but among those born in 1990 the figure is likely to be just 47%.</p> <p>According to PwC, those struggling to raise a deposit will continue to be thwarted by house price rises that outpace earnings growth. Although the rate of house price growth is set to fall back to 5% a year, the report said the average U.K. home would be worth around £360,000 by 2020, compared with £279,000 in 2015.</p> <p>John Hawksworth, chief economist at PwC, said more homes were needed in the long term: “A large and sustained increase in affordable housing supply will be required to meet the needs of a U.K. population that is growing relatively rapidly by European standards.” He suggested policies to cap social rents, announced in the recent budget, could deter housing associations from investing heavily in building.</p> <p>Hawksworth said moves to build more homes would not have an impact in the short term and plans to make buy-to-let investments less attractive to landlords were only likely to make a difference “at the margins.” He added: “The increase in renting wouldn’t be a problem if we had the levels of quality seen in countries like Germany.</p> <p>“The solution to this doesn’t have to be to get more owner-occupiers, it could be to improve the quality of rented homes and allow for longer tenancies so people have more security in that sector.”</p> <p>Neal Hudson, housing market analyst at property firm Savills, said the barrier for current prospective homebuyers was not the cost of owning but the cost of buying. “With low mortgage rates, annual housing costs are more affordable than for those in the rented tenures,” he said.</p> <p>“Instead, with house prices still at many multiples of income and mortgage lending at high loan-to-values limited and expensive, it is the cost of raising a deposit that prevents many from buying a home.”</p> <p>The director of the campaign group Generation Rent, Betsy Dillner, said high costs meant people in rented accommodation were struggling to save for the future. “As more low earners and retirees rent privately with no way to pay the rent, the taxpayer will pick up the tab,” she said.</p> <p>“The government needs to have a plan B: to invest directly in housebuilding and reform renting to make it a genuine long-term alternative to home ownership. The longer they fail to act, the more renters they’ll have to answer to.”</p> <p>The long-term effect of the movement away from home ownership was highlighted in a recent report for the Chartered Institute of Housing, which found that in 35 years’ time a third of people aged over 60 will live in rented accommodation.</p> <p>David Beattie, managing director at pensions firm Aegon UK, said this could cause problems for future retirees. “Should homeowners need it, they can release the equity to fund their retirement or top up their income.” he said. “It was once a given that by the time people retired many would own their own home. Buses were coming from the Los Angeles/Long Beach areas on Wednesday for what organizers expected to be the largest events of the week.</p> <p><strong>Why Protest ALEC?</strong></p> <p>The march of pro-dirty energy, anti-equality and austerity-based legislation in recent decades has a direct correlation to the lack of opportunity and widening gap between the rich and the poor.</p> <p>The American Legislative Exchange Council, with its closed-door meetings and dubious financial relationships with state legislators, has been the driving force behind many of these bad ideas. ALEC functions as a legislative "bill mill" where company lobbyists and right wing crusaders dictate their desires to elected representatives, brought together with corporate “scholarships” and the hope of future campaign support.</p> <p>As Paul Krugman wrote, “ALEC, even more than other movement-conservative organizations, is clearly playing a long game. Its legislative templates aren’t just about generating immediate benefits to the organization’s corporate sponsors; they’re about creating a political climate that will favor even more corporation-friendly legislation in the future.”</p> <p>A steadily mounting campaign of public exposure, fueled in large part by the investigative prowess of the Center for Media and Democracy, along with the activism of Color of Change and Common Cause, has led more than 90 of the corporate members who fund ALEC to withdraw their support.</p> <p>Thousands of people signed a petition at Change.Org calling upon Mayor Kevin Faulconer to refuse to speak at ALEC’s annual conference alongside Tea Party leaders. In addition, members of San Diego’s Overpass Light Brigade assembled in front of the Manchester Grand Hyatt, where ALEC meeting attendees were staying, to stage a light brigade that read “STOP ALEC.”</p> <p>San Diego Democrats held a “Stop ALEC Welcome Party” on Tuesday, gathering with other allied organizations to provide incoming ALEC legislators with a visual reminder that they are not welcome in San Diego.</p> <p>On Wednesday, Dolores Huerta headlined a labor rally in which thousands of activists from the immigration, labor, interfaith and environmental justice communities came together at Embarcadero Park North. Speakers included Ethiopian-American labor activist Tefere Gebre, executive vice president of the AFL-CIO; activist Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, and representatives from community groups.</p> <p>The announcement for the rally included the following statement:</p> <p>"The coalition of groups protesting the conference will stand together to deliver a message to the out-of-state politicians and their wealthy benefactors: California is a No ALEC Zone. Our state has roundly rejected ALEC’s regressive agenda that rolls back the rights of everyday people to further line the pockets of wealthy and powerful corporate interests.</p> <p>On Wednesday, the statewide Courage Campaign also held a rally at Embarcadero Park North, stating ahead of time their reason for protesting ALEC:</p> <p>“Legislators from across the country will arrive to take their marching orders from the Koch Brothers, giant corporations, and right-wing millionaires and billionaires.
